The Grasslands Christmas Light Installation — Columbia

One of Columbia’s most established neighborhoods, with the kind of houses that reward a restrained hand.

Restraint, executed properly

The Grasslands is settled, wooded, and quietly one of the nicest places to drive through in Columbia in December. The prevailing taste here runs understated, which raises rather than lowers the bar — when a display is quiet, every flaw in it is loud. One sagging span or one mismatched bulb and the whole thing reads careless.

What does a restrained display actually involve?

A single color temperature, even spacing, garland where garland belongs, and a roofline traced so cleanly it looks like the house was drawn that way. Nothing blinking, nothing racing, nothing inflatable on the lawn.

Is a smaller display cheaper?

Usually, yes — and we will tell you when less light is the better answer. On a wooded lot the top peak sometimes disappears behind the canopy anyway, and there is no sense charging you for a run nobody sees.

How do you keep it looking right all season?

Maintenance is included. A dark section on a quiet display is far more noticeable than on a busy one, so we would rather hear about it and come fix it than have it sit.

We walk the property first: on wooded lots the view from the street and the view the homeowner pictures are rarely the same thing. Worth ten minutes before quoting.
